You need not be a fan of the saxophone by hearing the music of King Curtis, only needs a pulse. King Curtis was one of the best saxophone players in the rock and roll and soul scene and contributed to many albums in his day.
I wish King Curtis' saxophone was playing at age ten when he heard Louis Jordan first play. He told his adoptive parents who wanted more than anything to play the saxophone. His desire reached a peak when he learned of the tenor styles of Lester Young.
When he was 11 years old, his parents gave him an alto saxophone, which began playing in high school band. Curtis changed the tenor when their school band needed a tenor player. When he was 16, started his own band and was playing at parties and dances. Strongly influenced by players from Texas as the tenor Illinois Jacquet, Earl Bostic and Arnett Cobb, was at home with rhythm and blues, pop and jazz.
The notes of one of its album, Curtis describes his influences in greater detail: "I liked Gene Ammons, Dexter Gordon, Lester Young and Sonny Stitt as well. I also dug Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins to the ballads, installation Getz, Charlie Parker for the technique. Other influencing both myself and Ornette Coleman was a Texas tenor man named Red Connor, who was a Coltrane ahead of his time. "
It was not long before he heard play successful artists Curtis and wanted him for their albums. He recorded the saxophone parts of the song by Chuck Willis What Am I Living For Clyde McPhatter and the song of a lover question. His breakthrough performance was when he recorded Yackety Yak with coasters. After his impressive performance on that album, his staccato style laces become known as "Sax yackety. Curtis found that jazz was not the best direction of a profitable career in music and fully supported the opportunity to play albums in more commercial environment. Recorded remember the past with Buddy Holly and recorded songs on her own, the most notable being and Soul Serenade Soul Twist.
In the mid-sixties, King Curtis recorded its two most successful songs of all time, Memphis Soul Stew and Ode to Billie Joe. He also directed the band accompanying Aretha Franklin, lords over this time. He continued his relationship with the coasters in the sixties and spent some time producing albums for other acts, often in collaboration with the legendary producer Jerry Wexler. Curtis became a popular attraction at rock shows around the world and had the opportunity to play some of the best places in the period.
In 1971, Curtis contributed sax break in the John Lennon song, It's So Hard, which was a subject of Lennon's Imagine album. Unfortunately, one month before the release of U.S. the album, Curtis had an altercation at the door of his house when a group of men blocking the door of his apartment building refused to move so she could enter Curtis was stabbed to death, and the music world lost another one of his greatest.
